The Project
Main Roads WA initiated the construction of a new Principal Shared Pathway (PSP) linking Leach Highway and Mount Henry Bridge—known as the ‘Cranford Ave PSP’ project. As part of the broader landscaping and revegetation efforts, PMB was commissioned to supply and install approximately 700m³ of mulch along this critical stretch of infrastructure. The goal was to create a robust and sustainable foundation for future plantings, ensuring the longevity and resilience of the landscaping work.
The Challenge
Executing this project came with its share of challenges, particularly given the nature of the site and the specific requirements set out by Main Roads WA:
No Access During Daytime Hours – To minimise disruption to traffic and ensure the safety of workers, all work had to be conducted at night. This added a layer of complexity to the project, requiring careful planning and execution under limited visibility.
Steep Embankment – The path ran alongside a steep embankment, making the task of spreading mulch evenly and securely a challenging one. Traditional methods would have struggled with the incline, risking uneven coverage and potential erosion.
Quality-Focused Client – Main Roads WA is known for its high standards, particularly when it comes to materials. They required mulch that not only met their specifications but also adhered to AS4454 standards, ensuring the best possible outcome for the revegetation project.
Our Solution
At PMB, we’re no strangers to challenging projects. Here’s how we approached it:
Night Shift Operations – We are well-versed in night-time operations, having completed numerous projects under similar conditions. Our team adapted seamlessly to the night shift, ensuring that all work was carried out efficiently and safely, without compromising on quality.
Blowing Mulch on Steep Embankments – Our blower trucks are built for versatility. We parked at the base of the embankment and used our powerful machinery to blow the mulch up the slope, achieving even coverage across the entire area. Whether it’s a rooftop garden or a steep hill, we have the tools and expertise to get the job done right.
Commitment to Quality – Quality is at the heart of everything we do. We sourced mulch that not only met but exceeded AS4454 standards, ensuring it was perfectly suited to the project’s needs. This commitment to quality aligns with Main Roads WA’s high expectations, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted partner for large-scale civil projects.
The entire installation, including clean-up, was completed on schedule, laying the groundwork for successful revegetation.
The Result
After waiting 12 months to allow for proper weed management, Main Roads WA planted Tubestock in Winter 2023.
Two years on and the results are amazing!
Despite Perth experiencing one of the longest summer droughts on record, the plant losses have been minimal, and the growth has been exceptional. The quality of the mulch played a critical role in this success, providing the necessary support for the plants to thrive even under challenging conditions.
